This Christmas season, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints invites everyone to celebrate the birth and life of Jesus Christ while extending a loving hand to those in need. The Church are excited to bring back the Light The World Giving Machines to the Philippines.

Light The World Giving Machines in Ayala Center Cebu

These unique "giving-focused" vending machines add a fun and spiritual dimension to the shopping and gift-giving season. Unlike regular vending machines, the Giving Machines dispense valuable and affordable product cards that facilitate acts of service for fellow Filipinos in need, allowing the public to instantly participate in the joy of caring.

With the generosity of our location partners, a Giving Machine will be hosted by Ayala Malls TriNoma in Quezon City, launching on November 9, 2023, at 11:00 AM on Level 4, near Cinema 1. In Cebu, another Giving Machine will be hosted by Ayala Center Cebu, launching on November 16, 2023, at 11:00 AM on Level 3 (between Casa Verde and Dessert Factory).

All Giving Machines will be available during mall hours until January 1, 2024.

This year's items available through the Giving Machines include food packs, hygiene kits, educational materials, student financial aid, emergency and repair kits, multivitamins, eyeglasses and eye-care packages, medical kits, water kits, crutches, wheelchairs, immunization packages, and psychosocial support, among others.

Unlike previous years, donors now have the option to contribute via cash or e-payment alternatives, including GCash and AliPay, making cashless donations easier.

The Church covers all operational costs for every donated item made through the Giving Machines, ensuring that 100 percent of every donation goes to the recipients identified by our participating nonprofit organizations, including Caritas Manila, Caritas Cebu, Feed The Children, Inc., HERO Foundation, Inc., Mabuhay Deseret Foundation, and UNICEF.

As a special gift for select donors this year, some product cards inside the Manila Giving Machines will contain unique Tabernacle Choir stickers. Donors can trade these stickers for special tickets for the upcoming February 2024 concert of the Choir in the Philippines.

The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is a world-renowned choir established in 1847 that has performed at many prestigious events, including US Presidential inaugurations. Currently, the Choir is on its first-ever world tour, with the Philippines as its second stop after Mexico.

Since 2018, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has hosted Giving Machines in the Philippines, one of only six countries worldwide to do so every Christmas season. To date, the Giving Machines have collected over US$22 million in donations for beneficiaries across the globe.

Each Christmas season, the Church’s #LightTheWorld initiative invites all people to follow the loving example of the Savior Jesus Christ, the Light of The World, by caring for individuals one by one.

What is #LightTheWorld?

Every Christmas, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints celebrates the birth and life of Jesus Christ through the #LightTheWorld initiative. What makes these vending machines unique?

As part of the #LightTheWorld initiative, individuals can perform an instant service at special vending machines called Giving Machines. Instead of every donor receiving an item for themselves, Giving Machines are designed to provide for those in need.

Whom do the donations benefit?

Each Giving Machine will offer much-needed items for purchase from various local and global charity partners. The vending machines will meticulously account for all donations, ensuring the amount purchased goes to each charity.

How is my money used?

One hundred percent of your donation will be used for the purchased item or similar items or services of greater need, as determined by the applicable charitable organization. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covers administrative costs for this initiative.

How long will the Giving Machines be available in the malls?

The machines will be accessible from the date of the launch until January 1, 2024.

LAPU-LAPU CITY, Cebu – Students of Pajo Elementary School can now enjoy the updated facilities in their newly inaugurated Florida U. Young Building -- a 2-storey home economics school building constructed in support of Republic Act 8525 or the Adopt-a-School Act of the Department of Education (DepEd).

The building was turned over on Tuesday, September 5, 2023 by GFHI.

The building features a fully furnished home economics room on the ground floor, which has a bedroom, kitchen, furniture, and laboratory that will help the Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP), and Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE) students of Pajo Elementary School.  It is designed to nurture practical skills among students and set them on a path towards self-sufficiency and empowerment.

This generous donation of GFHI underscores their unwavering dedication to community development and education.

“Over many decades, my grandmother Florida U. Young recognized the role of educators in nurturing and guiding our youth to become future leaders of our country. She had always believed that education is the great equalizer of opportunities,” he said.

“This school building is not just a manifestation of her vision to help enhance educational facilities in the province that nurtured her youth, but more importantly, this is a symbol to inspire our young generation to study harder, learn more, complete their education, and achieve more, with pride,” Mr. Chris Young added.

In her acceptance speech, Pajo Elementary School Principal Melodina Wahing expressed her appreciation to GFHI for choosing their school as recipient of the donation. She assured that the school will take good care of their new building.

“Your generosity is what gives our young pupils the resources they need and this opens doors for the next generation. Your donation gives our pupils the pride and unrelenting motivation because you believe in them,” she said.

In his speech, Mayor Chan recalled how the Young family, GMC, and GFHI have always been supportive of his administration and generous to the Oponganons.

“I know Mr. George U. Young, Jr. (current president of GFHI).  Education has always been very close to the heart of Mr. Young and his family. And that is why, as a way of giving back to the community, they have chosen schools as the beneficiaries of buildings,” he said.

Chan, who used to be the barangay captain of Pajo before becoming mayor in 2019, said he is thankful that GFHI chose Pajo Elementary School as the beneficiary of the new school building.

Named after a visionary woman who left an indelible mark on her community, the Florida U. Young Building stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Mrs. Young and her commitment to children and basic education.

This remarkable structure is poised to serve as a beacon of hope and progress for generations of students, teachers, and families in Lapu-Lapu City.

“When we started WOMENtrepreneurs Meetup earlier this year, our goal was to support women leaders in the outsourcing industry. In fact, Microsourcing CEO and CCAP HR Council Haidee Enriquez said, “The BPO industry is a critical contributor to the Philippine economy, contributing $29.5 billion in revenues, or 7.5% to our gross domestic product. It is crucial that the industry adapts to achieve unparalleled success..”

The appetite for growing the outsourcing industry was apparent in the recently held WOMENtrepeneurs Meetup in Cebu wherein BPO leaders shared inspiring stories during the panel discussion.

One of the most iconic figures in the history of modern Christianity is Padre Pio de Pietrelcina. Even while he was still living, the devotion shown to him grew to astounding proportions. His figure inspired an extraordinary religious boost that was already high when he was still living but considerably greater after he died in 1968 since he dedicated his existence to prayer, sacrifice, and total dedication to GOD, the Blessed Mother, the Holy Souls, and other people who needs him.

Padre Pio's influence is well-loved worldwide, including in the Philippines. Thousands of delegates and pilgrims across the Visayas pay homage to Saint Padre Pio's "incorrupt" heart at the IEC Pavilion in Cebu City on October 12, 2018. The visit sparked spiritual renewal and inspired Catholics to draw closer to God. It has also encouraged the Padre Pio Contemplative Community of Cebu, a lay Catholic consecrated group, officially affiliated and member of the International Prayer Group based in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy, the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza, to finally actualize its ten-year plan of building a sanctuary for the beloved saint in Cebu.

Monsignor Roger Fuentes, who serves as the spiritual director of the community and duly appointed by the Archbishop of Cebu, said that while there already exists a church for Padre Pio in Cebu and a sanctuary in other parts of the Philippines, it will be the first of its kind in Cebu.

Bro. Richard Saing servant group leader of the Padre Pio Contemplative Community of Cebu shared that the community has been in Cebu for more than thirty years but they did not have a permanent place of worship and monthly recollection. On Padre Pio's birthday last year, the group offered a mass and decided to conceptualize the sanctuary. Out of the various lots offered, the Padre Pio Contemplative Community of Cebu secured a lot in Upper Tanay Road, Pulangbato, Cebu City.

"It was high time to plan - to plan for a bigger space so we can invite people to join us, to join the prayer, and make a place for everyone as a house of prayer. We wish it to be a house of prayer, a symbol of hope, and a lighthouse of faith," Bro. Richard Saing said.

A month later, the group with its humble and generous members and devotees was able to build a chapel dedicated to Padre Pio in Pulangbato. Brother Richard shared that they continue to pray and plan to have a sanctuary - a pilgrim center not only for Cebu devotees but for the entire country and the world to visit and pay homage, and venerate the first degree Relics of St. Padre Pio de Pietrelcina.

"Archbishop Palma encouraged the community to plan and dream big to cater all devotees and pilgrims. He emphasized very clearly and categorically that in planning for the sanctuary, we need a big area. In other words, he has already envisioned a larger place for the devotion of Padre Pio," Bro. Richard added.

On September 17, 2022, Cebu's Archbishop Jose S. Palma presided over the sanctuary's groundbreaking ceremony alongside the officers and members of the Padre Pio Contemplative Community of Cebu.

Dubbed Santuario di Padre Pio - Cebu, the sanctuary dedicated to St. Pio de Pietrelcina in Pulangbato is designed to accommodate the ever-increasing number of devotees on pilgrimage. It will have a 100-feet-tall image of the miraculous saint which would either be made of cement and steel. Right at the heart of the structure will be the oratory for Padre Pio. Not only will it remind Cebuanos of the visit to the corrupt heart of Padre Pio, but also, of the heart that knows the pain and suffering of the world, a Christ-like heart. The group has tapped the talent of Architect Vic Gulane, architect and sculptor, and Architect Omar Maxwell Espina for the site development.

Apart from a three-story building that will house its chapel, conference rooms, and ceremonial halls, the community also planned to build an open space pilgrim center that can accommodate more than 3,000 devotees, similar to the Basilica del Sto. Niño. In this way the internal space blends with the external one. Retreat houses and a home for first-class relics of father Pio are also part of the sanctuary's development plan.

The community has organized a dinner for a cause at Marco Polo Cebu, wherein they have received a decent amount of monetary pledges. They also plan to work with more than thirty private companies that are willing to help materialize the project.

Monsignor Fuentes disclosed that they have 1.5 hectares of land for the sanctuary, but they're still looking into the possibility of expanding area. He also revealed that it would take approximately half a billion for the overall project to complete, but the community is positive and hopeful for their plan to build a sanctuary of prayer, hope, and love for Padre Pio.

Every first Saturday of the month, the Padre Pio contemplative community of Cebu welcomes everyone to reconcile with the Lord. The community holds monthly recollection, and healing masses at the Santuario di Padre Pio - Cebu at Pulangbato, especially during Holy Week. With everyone's prayers and financial support, the sanctuary is set to be a home of God's love and mercy.

Vic Metal Fabrication and Environmental Services Inc. held the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) Training Center groundbreaking and Cebu Waste Management Facility inauguration last July 28 at its 8,647 sq. m. property in Brgy. Mactan, Lapu-Lapu City.

The integrated waste management solution will help address the challenges in waste management that the province is facing.

Leading the activity were Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard ‘Ahong’ Chan, and Vic Metal President and CEO Victoriano Ocon. They were joined by representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Agriculture (DA), Pollution Control Association of the Philippines Inc., MatLuster Corp., and PT. Indopower International. 

Vic Metal has already completed the first and second phases of the project which involves the construction of the Water Laboratory for Wastewater Analysis and Treatment as well as the MRF and Treatment, Storage, and Disposal (TSD) facility for the recovery, segregation, treatment, and disposal of different wastes.

This is expected to reduce residual wastes disposed of in Cebu landfills to around 50 tons per month. The project will also diminish the mishandling of waste and other waste-related environmental issues, and the hazards posed by illegal dumpsites and mismanaged landfills in the province. 

The design implementation ensures proper segregation, recycling, and composting of solid waste and wastewater treatment through different technologies.

“The said facility will significantly reduce waste disposed in landfills which has become a major urban development issue in Cebu,” said DILG Secretary Atty. Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. in a video message dedicated to the event.

“I hope these kinds of initiatives, private and public sector partnership, will be enhanced and that similar environment related projects will also be emulated by other local government units in the future,” added Secretary Abalos. 

The last phase of the project involves the development of a training center, the first in the province to highlight education and training on proper solid and liquid waste management.  It also includes the building of a park for recreation and the promotion of environmental awareness.

While the project is a private sector initiative, Vic Metal Fabrication works with the public sector to ensure that municipal solid wastes will be collected, transported, treated, and disposed of properly. Its successful operation will positively impact the community, the economy, and the environment.

Cebu province has a population of over 5 million as of 2019. Its growing economy and population have led to increasing infrastructure development, contributing to more waste generated. 

The projected daily waste generation for the province by 2025 is 1.2M tons.  This will go directly to landfills if proper waste management is not implemented. 

Negative effects of the mismanagement of wastes can contribute to the loss of biodiversity; land, water, and air pollution; generation of greenhouse gasses; and the risk of several diseases and health problems.

20 qualified micro-entrepreneurs from Dumanjug & Pinamungahan received Livelihood Starter Kits from Ramon Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. Microfinance (RAFI-MFI) through their Clustering for Livelihood Program (CLP) during the Turnover Ceremony last June 21, 2022.

The program was initiated to assist the RAFI-MFI clients and their families that were deeply affected by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and Typhoon Odette. The back-to-back crisis was hard enough for families of the greater population - all the more dire for the communities in the small rural areas of Dumanjug and Pinamungajan. Over 50 families were left with damaged homes in their area. To this day, families are still struggling to recover from the losses, especially of their small businesses, due to these disasters.

Seeing this immediate need to assist the families in the said areas, the RAFI-MFI team set out to create a program to equip them with the means to rise back up again. Thus, the Clustering for Livelihood Program (CLP) was born in 2021.

“CLP is an effective approach to help the clients especially to the business owners who were affected by the pandemic and odette so we will be able to provide another additional skills, knowledge and competency to livelihood training, give them marketing support and linkages and provide startup kits to help start their businesses…” stated Jonar B. Dorado, RAFI MFI Chief Operations Officer.

They coordinated closely with Hon. Elly Luague, Counselor of Dumanjug, and the local government units (LGUs) of each venue to make the turnover ceremony possible.

“Wala jud mahitabo kung wala’y kaalam, kahanas, ug kinaiya—mao ni sila ang mga pamaagi para sa kalambuan sa inyong kinabuhi. Maong paningkamot ug fight gyud para sa kalambuan,” Hon. Luage emphasized as she gave her closing statements.

Through the coordinated effort of the LGUs and RAFI-MFI, the Chorizo livelihood kits were successfully awarded to the identified cluster beneficiaries who are in food businesses during the small ceremony held at the program sites.

“I hope that this program brings hope and a strong foundation for a productive livelihood journey and economic recovery because of the pandemic,” adds Mr. Dorado.

I thought they were only giving trainings, but they went beyond and gave us livelihood kits too),” shared nanay Nelia Gines from Pinamungajan.

With the livelihood kits, the RAFI MFI hopes that the beneficiaries will have enough marketing support and linkages to grow their business, and in effect elevate their lives and that of their families & communities. The kits are only but tools to equip them to sustain & grow their businesses; but at the end of the day, it is up to these microentrepreneurs to take action.

The RAFI MFI organizers capped off the event by bringing home their message of hope & support as “Kaagapays” to the hardworking business-minded people.

In celebration of its 65th year milestone, World Vision Philippines shared over six decades’ worth of providing better future for vulnerable children through a virtual media launch held last May 30, 2022. The event featured an impactful campaign launch for “Childhood Rescue” with Bianca Umali as the campaign’s lead celebrity ambassador.

World Vision’s “Childhood Rescue” aims to focus on the most dangerous places where children and their communities have been greatly affected by armed conflicts such as Marawi.

The Marawi siege in 2017 has caused thousands of young Filipinos to live amidst armed conflict, political unrest, and ongoing instability even until today. It has displaced at least 350,000 people, including at least 200,000 children, according to the Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Disaster Response Assistance and Management Bureau (DREAMB).

In these places, children are extremely vulnerable to violence, poverty, and abuse. The Childhood Rescue Campaign advances World Vision’s purpose— protecting the lives, welfare, and rights of children, especially those who are living in the most dangerous places.

As part of national initiative Task Force Bangon Marawi, World Vision’s Childhood Rescue campaign responds to these urgent and arising challenges with effective interventions, and crisis recovery programs to address the needs of internally displaced families and children since 2017.

World Vision hopes to increase support and raise more donations for its ongoing child welfare projects, “Bangon Marawi” and “Child Protection”. Both programs aim to cover a total of 10 barangays with 6,559 children as target beneficiaries this 2022.

Jun Godornes, Resource Development Director of World Vision, said during the official media launch, “Given the challenging situation of dangerous areas in the Philippines that may take a very long time to resolve, there is a constant threat that a Filipino child's life can change for the worst in an instant. Despite this situation, World Vision is doing its best to ensure that these children don’t miss out on having a joyful childhood and a hope for a peaceful future. Aside from the Childhood Rescue program launch, World Vision also unveiled its new campaign, and future projects in time for its 65th Anniversary celebration. With the mission to bring “Hope, Joy and Justice for All Children”, World Vision aims to reach the most vulnerable children and transform their lives.

Kapuso star and actress Bianca Umali shared her experiences as a World Vision ambassador and expressed her support for the Childhood Rescue campaign through a video message shown during the media launch.

“World Vision has given me the opportunity to become an ‘ate’ to these vulnerable children. Every small effort in helping them goes a long way,” Bianca shared as she recalls her trip to Marawi with World Vision. “Every child deserves to have a childhood. Let us all come together for these children because I believe that they are the future.”

With a total of 47,302 individuals including 16,875 children assisted by the organization’s efforts, World Vision remains committed to serving more affected families and assisting in rebuilding communities to help provide a safe place for children.

28 solo mothers in the Municipality of Cordova successfully completed the ICT and Life Skills Training Program of the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry(CCCI),  and the New Zealand Embassy Manila in collaboration with the CCCI Cordova Chapter, the Local Government Unit of Cordova, and the Department of Information & Communications Technology Visayas Cluster 2 office, on April 8 via Zoom.

As the last site of the ICT and LIFE SKILLS Training Program for Solo Mothers, the training took a setback last December when Super Typhoon Odette left a hair-raising memory which brought destruction to homes, properties, livelihoods at a time when everyone were already facing the societal and developmental impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amidst the challenges, 28 resilient and empowered solo mothers finished the course with high hopes of finding opportunities with options either to join the workforce or continue their entrepreneurial stint in baby steps. 

The graduation ceremony was graced by the New Zealand Embassy Aid Programme Manager, Ms. Dyan Mabunga Rodriguez and Cordova Mayor, Hon. Mary Therese Sitoy-Cho. CCCI Cordova Chapter President, Engr. Sam Augusto, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the New Zealand Embassy and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce for engaging the chapter and capacitating them in implementing the program.

In his message, CCCI President Charles Kenneth Co encouraged the solo mothers to remain hopeful and inspired to overcome each obstacle in life. VP for Membership/Chamber Growth, Atty. Tomas Riveral closed the program with emphasis on the importance of a strong support system in helping a person overcome hardship and looking at the bright side of everything, especially for solo mothers. 

The ICT and LIFE SKILLS training program was made possible with the untiring support and patience of Ms. Claire Fernandez and Engr. Royden Rusiana as Lead and Co-Trainers, respectively, with Mr. Alexander Vincent Ruñez of AXL Trainings as the Life Skills trainer who generously shared their knowledge, expertise, support and encouragement to the solo mothers.

CCCI also extends its appreciation and gratefulness to Mr. Cesar Munez, President of San Roque College de Cebu, for providing the venue and internet access to the trainees.
